​SAN JOSE, CA – The 2022-23 school year has brought the Alternative Education Department of the �������� Office of Education (SCCOE) an abundance of recognition for its programs, staff, and most importantly the impact it has on students. 

The SCCOE’s Alternative Education Department​ provides alternative educational services for students. 

“No matter their life experiences, every student has the right to learn in an inclusive, quality educational program,” said County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Mary Ann Dewan. “The Alternative Education Department exemplifies dedication to inspiring and promoting student success. I’m proud of their work and look forward to seeing more students thrive in their programs.”

The LiUNA pre-apprenticeship program is a winner of the Glenn Hoffmann Exemplary Programs Awards. This award is presented by the �������� School Boards Association. Introduced to Blue Ridge High School at William F. James Ranch in 2018, the LiUNA pre-apprenticeship program provides students with 14 weeks of skills-intensive curriculum and hands-on learning. Through the program, students can earn up to 12 industry-recognized certifications in preparation for entering the construction workforce. To date, 165 certifications have been awarded to students. The program is a partnership among the �������� Office of Education (SCCOE), the �������� Division of Juvenile Probation, and the Laborers International Union of North America (LiUNA). 

The South County Community School was recognized as a 2023 YMCA Project Cornerstone Asset Champion in the Caring School Climate category. Schools in this category are transforming their campuses into caring communities where all students are valued and feel welcome and respected. To share their appreciation and excitement for the award, two program students wrote an article published in Gilroy Life. They gained first-hand experience with the guidance of a local journalist to write their story and have it placed in the paper, a unique experience for students. 

“Our top priority is to invest in students and do what’s best for our students in all aspects of their lives,” said Principal of South County Alternative Education for the �������� Office of Education, Mark Camilleri. “Being student-centered, focusing on individual needs and ways to make learning relevant is what benefits our students.” 

To support exemplary programs is an outstanding educator, Principal of South County Alternative Education for the SCCOE, Mark Camilleri. The Association of California School Administrators (ACSA)​ Region 8 announced the winners of their awards program, which included Camilleri as the Continuation/Educational Options Administrator of the year. In his own community, Camilleri was awarded the Cesar E. Chavez Community Champion Award from the Community Agency for Resources, Advocacy and Services. He was chosen by community members for his commitment to students and families of South County. 

“I have been very fortunate working in an organization that has students at the front and center, which makes it an amazing experience to work with every day,” Camilleri said. “Innovative collaborations with staff and community partners are what really elevate alternative education.”
