Intro to Home Visits
1.5-hour professional development training session

Home visits are among one of the most impactful practices for building relationships, establishing welcome and creating trusting bonds for family, school and community partnerships. Research has shown that home visits decreased chronic absence rates, increased academic success, decreased suspensions and expulsion rates, and increased rates of applying to 2 & 4 year colleges. Participants in this workshop will reflect on current mindsets and challenges for adopting home visits as a school-wide practice, receive a high level introduction to home visits, and explore some strategies to apply before receiving formal training or implementing home visits as a school-wide parent engagement practice.

This workshop is intended for school staff including administrators, teachers, and community liaisons.

Creating Family and Community Hubs for Literacy
1.5-hour professional development training session

Libraries have long been a favorite hangout spot for students and it’s time to loop in the whole family on what makes the library so special and meaningful! This workshop will share family literacy engagement programs which will dramatically increase family and caregiver partnership for supporting reading comprehension development. Participants will learn how to host a family literacy event at their school library, family resource room, community library, or alternative and non-traditional setting using Interactive Read Alouds (Preschool - 3rd grade) and Family Book Clubs (4th grade - High School). Lesson plans and book lists will be provided for easy implementation.

Service With a Smile: Creating a Culture of Welcome and Belonging
Family-facing professionals are often the first point of contact between a family member and the school, well before the student even enters the classroom! The connection between the family and the school is solidified in that first interaction. More and more, educational professionals are recognizing that strong customer service and student achievement go hand-in-hand: when parents, students, and staff feel valued and heard, engagement increases which leads to student achievement. This highly interactive workshop aims to identify the “why” which spearheads the need for extraordinary customer service in creating a culture of welcome and belonging for families.

Training is suitable for front office staff, librarian, school counselor, principal, community liaison, teacher, coach, parent volunteer - anyone who interacts with parents. If you want to consider how you could improve the customer experience to build trusting relationships with families in your school community, this workshop is for you.

Part 1 - Attendees will evaluate current practices and learn how to take your school’s customer experience from good to great. (1.5-hour professional development training session)

Part 2- Participants will learn about the value of feedback and dive into analyzing scenarios with difficult parents and role-play involving challenging situations. (1.5-hour professional development training session)

Parts 1 & 2 can also be presented in one 3-hour training block

*Participants should bring their work laptop or similar device to access District and School site family engagement plans. Participants will also need access to school climate survey data.
