Preliminary Teaching Credential Programs

The Educator Preparation Programs Preliminary Credential program is designed to prepare candidates to earn their Preliminary Teaching Credential through a CCTC-accredited program. The program prepares candidates to become teacher specialists in inclusive classrooms. It provides instructional and experiential opportunities to work with families, develop collaborative skills, and become proficient classroom managers. Candidates learn from experts in the field- current and past teachers, special education directors, and scholars. Coursework is divided into modules covering a two-year period, spread throughout the Fall Semester, Spring Semester, and Summer Semester. Eligible candidates will work as intern teachers in their second year. While in a cohort throughout the program, participants share their learning experiences and begin cross-program collaborations-- learning collaborative behaviors that will assist them throughout their careers as teachers. To accommodate work schedules, classes meet late afternoons and evenings and on some Saturdays. All classes are held online. The Education Specialist Preliminary Credential pathway offers concentrations in
Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE),
Mild Moderate Support Needs (MMSN), and
Extensive Support Needs (ESN). The
Multiple Subject Preliminary Teaching Credential pathway leads to a general education credential to teach primarily in elementary self-contained classrooms grades K-8.

Educator Preparation Programs offers courses so that Education Specialists credentialed before 2021 can update their credentials to meet the current requirements.

PK-3 ECE Specialist Instruction Credential - Coming Soon!
The PK-3 Early Childhood Education (ECE) Specialist Instruction Credential focuses on developmentally appropriate practices for young children in grades PK through 3. PK-3 candidates will learn to design, implement, and facilitate learning activities for this grade span using Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and tools that engage students according to their developmental levels. All courses are taught through the lens of culturally relevant and inclusive practices. Coursework prepares candidates to create engaging learning activities aligned to children's cognitive, social, emotional, linguistic, cultural assets, and any area(s) of special need. This credential recognizes and values the rich background and extensive experience of candidates currently working in ECE settings. Foundational experiences in early care and education envirnonments has prepared candidates for entry into the PK-3 ECE Specialist Instruction Credential and for service as an intern teacher in PK-3 ECE classroom settings.
Teacher Residency Program:
Aspiring teacher candidates spend a full school year cycle alongside an accomplished mentor teacher while simultaneously engaging in an online credentialing program. SCCOE partners with National University and the Teachers College of San Joaquin to offer this program. Teacher Residency allows you to work alongside a mentor teacher for 3-5 days per week throughout an entire school year, giving you the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience in the classroom. Residents are given a $25,000 stipend (broken up into smaller payments throughout the program). Residents agree to teach in ·¬ÇÑÉçÇø for a period of at least 4 years (out of the next 8 years) following earning a Preliminary Teaching Credentials. Mentors earn a stipend as well! The SCCOE Teacher Residency pathway offers concentrations in Multiple Subject, Single Subject (Science), Single Subject (Math), Mild Moderate Support Needs (MMSN), and Extensive Support Needs (ESN).
​Professional Clear Teaching Credential Program: The Teacher I​nduction Program
The Teacher Induction Program with Educator Preparations Program (EPP), is grounded in three dimensions: 1) Scholarship which consists of collection, analysis, and utilization of data to improve performance; 2) Theory which incorporates the foundational principles of leadership such as organizational culture, communities of professional learning, systems thinking and adult learning theory; and 3) Practice, which is the application, in the field, of the learned knowledge and skills.
The SCCOE EPP Teacher Induction Program serves all preliminary multiple-subject, single-subject, and education specialist teachers in completing their professional clear teaching credential.
It is a two-year, individualized, job-embedded system of coaching, just-in-time support, and professional learning that begins in the teacher’s first year of teaching. The teacher induction program builds upon the skills learned in the preliminary credential program and documented on the Individualized Development Plan. The mentor teacher works with the candidate to develop and grow as a professional teacher and meet the California Standards for the Teaching Profession. Candidates will demonstrate the ability to:

- Understand and Organize Subject Matter for ALL student learning
- Plan Instruction and Design Learning Experiences for ALL Students
- Assess ALL Student Learning
- Develop as a Professional Educator
Candidates are matched to mentor teachers in the first 30 days of the program start according to credentials held, grade level and/or subject area, aligned with the candidate’s employment.
